Ward purchased by Reds
ZION, Ill. – Lake County Fielders manager Fran Riordan announced today that right-handed pitcher Zach Ward’s contract was purchased by the Cincinnati Reds and he will join the Lynchburg Hillcats, Cincinnati’s High-A affiliate, in the Carolina League.
In 15 starts this season with the Fielders, Ward was 7-5 with a 3.95 ERA. He leaves Lake County leading the Northern League in strikeouts with 85 and is tied for second in the league with three complete games.
Ward holds the league high of 13 strikeouts in a single game, which occurred on July 9 against the Rockford RiverHawks. Ward pitched a complete game shutout, holding Rockford to only six hits in the Fielders 5-0 victory. The Fielders are 10-5 when Ward is the starting pitcher and have not lost a game since June 28th in which Ward started on the mound.
Ward, 26, was a former third round pick of the Cincinnati Reds and has spent four minor league seasons in the Reds and the Minnesota Twins’ farms systems. He concluded his 2009 season with the New Britain Rock Cats, the Twins Double-A team in the Eastern League. Ward’s four year minor league ERA is 4.18 with 341 strike outs and a 1.38 WHIP.
The Lake County Fielders are a member of the Northern League. The team is owned in part by Academy Award winner and baseball enthusiast Kevin Costner. The Fielders stadium is located at the NE corner of Route 173 and Green Bay Road in Zion, Illinois.
