Schaumburg wins in walk-off fashion

 

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.- Lake County found offense right away off Schaumburg starter Ryan Gehring.  Guillermo Martinez singled to lead off the game, and with one out, Josh Short and Brian McFall hit consecutive singles, with Short’s scoring Martinez to give the Fielders a 1-0 lead.

 

Lake County starter Ryan Bicondoa had the early lead behind him but surrendered a solo home run to Kit Pellow in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at one.

 

Lake County answered back in the second.  With one away, Amos Ramon and Anthony Esquer reached base with hits and Juan Valdes singled with two outs to drive in Ramon to take back the lead.

 

Schaumburg plated one in the fourth when Mario Delgado contributed his fourth double of the year, followed by former Fielder Joey Gomes’ 16th double of the year to plate Delgado who eventually would finish the game with two doubles and a single as well as a walk.

 

In the fifth, Bicondoa hit leadoff man Tom Fitzgerald and gave up a single to Travis Brown before Ruddy Yan tried to sacrifice bunt; Bicondoa picked up the ball and threw it down the right field line plating two runs.  Bicondoa was removed from the game after five and one third innings, giving up nine hits and three earned runs while striking out four.

 

His opposition, Gehring also threw five and one third innings yielding 11 hits and three runs while out three Fielders.

 

Lake County tied the game in the seventh inning off Tom Lyons with consecutive hits from Joshua Short and Brian McFall.  Short ended the day with three singles, while McFall had two singles and a double.  McFall’s hit scored Short and scored to tie the game at five on a wild pitch.

 

Marco Gonzalez came into the ninth inning and gave up a leadoff double to Delgado again. A pop-out by Gomes and two intentional walks followed, loading the bases. With two outs, Tommy Fitzgerald got a hold of one, singling in the game winning run. 

 

Lake County will try and scratch out a win Sunday afternoon at Alexian Field in Schaumburg with first pitch at 1:20.
