Gary's pitching dominates in series finale
GARY, Ind. - Gary's pitching dominated the Fielders and led the RailCats to a 4-1 win over the Lake County Fielders Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series at U. S. Steel Yard.
The Fielders dropped two of three in the set, winning 6-4 on Saturday. Nicholson went 8.0 innings, allowed only three hits, one run and four walks while striking out three.
The Fielders only put seven men on base, three of them in the ninth inning. Lake County loaded the bases in the ninth on a Kyle Higgins leadoff double and two straight walks issued by Nicholson. That brought Andy Shipman in from the bullpen, and after a Jeff Dunbar sacrifice fly scored one.
Fielders starter, Ryan Bicondoa, went 6.2 innings, surrendering 11 hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out four. The RailCats got on the board in the fourth inning, with two on base and two out, Mike Valadez reached when third baseman Aaron Cone bobbled the ball. Zach Rodeghero came to the plate and drew a walk with bases loaded to force in a run and make the score 1-0.
The RailCats scored again in the sixth off an RBI single from Louis Ott. Gary put the final two runs on the board in the seventh, chasing starter Bicondoa.
The Fielders head back home tomorrow night to begin a 14-day, 16-game homestand in Zion. Tomorrow is the first game the Fielders will play under the lights at the new ballpark. First pitch will be thrown at 7:00pm. The game will be broadcasted live on WKRS 1220am.
